In the past, the human jaw was a little longer, as many teeth were needed to chew unprocessed food properly. As men learned how to process their food so it'll be easier to chew and digest, evolution took its course and our jaws got shorter by about a centimeter (maybe less). However, evolution didn't do quite a good job, as the teeth in the back of our jaws haven't disappeared, and cause a lot of trouble as they grow, since they don't have enough space to pop out normally.
Also, they are called "wisdom teeth" because they tend to come out around the age of 20, or the end of teenage years, that are considered the peak of your wisdom!
